Dual Threat is a blend of two top-performing varieties of oat seed developed for use as spring hay or haylage crop. Dual Threat combines a true forage oat variety with a dual-purpose oat variety in a unique mixture for forage production. The forage oats are very late maturing and have an extremely high leaf to stem ratio which increases dry matter yield of the blend. The dual-purpose oats are a tall variety that will produce grain quicker than the forage oats and cure more easily for hay if that is the chosen harvest method. Combining the two varieties has proven to increase dry matter yields and forage quality over planting one variety alone, and the harvest versatility that is gained makes this blend a popular option with livestock producers.

Planting
- Planting Time: Early Spring
- Oats can tolerate any light frost that may occur after planting.
- Drilled Seeding Rate: 80 lbs/acre
- Ideal Seeding Depth: 1.5″-2″
Fertility
- Oats require 9 lbs of N, 11 lbs of P2O5, and 45 lbs of K₂O per ton of forage produced.
- Make fertilizer applications based on expected yield and soil fertility levels.
- Apply ¼–½ rate of nitrogen at planting, and the remaining rate during mid- to late-tillering.
- Do not exceed a total of 25 lbs/a of N+K if fertilizer is placed in-furrow.

Harvest Management
- Dual Threat should be cut for hay or haylage when the first oats have begun to fill grain – the soft dough stage is a good target.
- At this point, the Everleaf oats will still be vegetative but have mostly fulfilled their yield potential so this is the point where Dual Threat has the best combination of yield and forage quality.
- Dual Threat is safe to graze if other harvest options become limited.
- Dual Threat is commonly followed with a second forage crop such as hay millet, sorghum-sudangrass, or grazing cover crop mixtures.
